HOW CAN COACHING HELP YOU?

“Our chief want in life is someone who will make us do what we can.” Emerson

You are smart and successful yet live with a nagging sense that something more is possible. Perhaps you are a new leader who just got promoted and are faced with new challenges that you don’t know how to address. Maybe you have reached a level of professional success, only to discover you are not satisfied. Or the same old interpersonal issues at work keep coming back to haunt you. Perhaps you are having difficulty motivating your team or are a rising star who wants to reach higher levels of excellence, but are not sure how to make it happen. Maybe you are just too busy, even overwhelmed, and looking for ways to simplify your life.

Rather than turning to a self-help book, a friend, or a one-day training class, imagine if you were able to build a trusting relationship with a dedicated, skilled professional who works one-on-one with you to navigate through the complexity of a new job, new position, or career change. Someone who works with you to get clear, focused and make better choices. Someone who sees the greatness in you and helps you to see it for yourself. Someone who is deeply committed to your making positive change happen.

That someone is a professional coach. Over the past ten years, coaching has emerged as an important profession in the personal and leadership development arena. Individuals and organizations are hiring Coaches to help them get from where they are now to where they want to be in all areas --  from life/work balance to leadership development to making an inspiring career change. What is so special and unique about the coaching process is that it brings about relevant, accelerated and sustainable results for clients.  How?

§   You work with your coach on a regular basis, one-on-one, over time (typically for 3 to 6 months)

§   The coach is trained in and applies advanced listening and dialogue skills and is has knowledge in  concepts from behavioral sciences, management literature, and/or spiritual traditions

§   The approach is customized to the individual’s needs

§   Since we learn best by doing, the Coach will give you exercises that ground the learning and transform the habits in your everyday life. (You couldn’t learn to play the piano without practicing.)

§   The coach acts simultaneously as a sounding board, cheerleader, champion of your potential, and challenger of your self-imposed limitations.

§   The coach helps you to see things that you might not normally see on your own, to gain a new perspective

§   You leave the coaching relationship with a greater capacity to self-correct when you observe yourself falling into old, familiar patterns.

When is coaching right for you? Reflect on whether you can truly devote the time, energy and investment to making change happen and on whether you would find it valuable to have a partner in this process.

My personal experience: As someone who has been coached I see it is a gift you give to yourself and your employees. How often do we take the time to step back, see what’s possible, refocus and move into action that is truly in line with our vision and goals for ourselves and our organizations? And, as someone who coaches others professionally, I am constantly inspired by the courage of my clients and so grateful for the contribution I can make in such a meaningful way.
